Trailer Analysis - Drama

Trailer Analysis
You're not you

The diegetic sound of screeching tires shows the audience straight away that this character is a bit unorganised and her life is mainly rushed, the fast paced manic music supports this and gives the audience a clear view on what this character is like. The dialogue is key in the next part as when as asked if she's even cared for anyone she replies "not really" which is important in showing she may have had a rough time in life and is key as it leads to her getting the job. Upbeat music is heard as you see how terrible this woman is and how unprofessional she is and she's described as "a nightmare". Even though she seems terrible they both share a laugh and implies good things are to come, the dialogue is key again as it shows how much the woman has come to like this girl as she doesn't make her feel "like a patient" - this cause empathy for the girl as you hope she will create more happiness for this woman. The music cuts out as the trailer shows the audience a flashback showing how her life has deteriorated and the woman slowly loses hope as she states "i'm going to die" - this is the more sad, dramatic part of the trailer as you begin to see how much this woman struggles but the music picks up as you see the girl in the background of the shot suggesting she will brig happier times for this woman. It is still partly sad as you see the strain on the woman's relationship with her husband as she states "i'm the one who got sick" and you begin to empathise with this woman and be glad she has this girl to care for her as she feels like a burden on her husband. As with drama trailers it can't all be doom and gloom so a humourous scene about sippy cups being "laced with tequila" also shows this woman can laugh and enjoy life - all thanks to this girl. This causes for a change in music about is becomes much more upbeat, inspiring and happy, as they scream in frustration the audience heart goes out to them as they start to wonder what they would do if they were in this situation. The trailer ends of heart felt moment instead of happy as happier shots were seen in montage with the woman saying "I don't know what id do without you" again pulling at the heart strings of the audience.

The opening medium shot of a car pulling up at a big fancy house instantly shows the difference between these two people, as the woman goes running into the house you can see her life is rushed, manic - this is contrasted as it cuts to the lush interior of their home.A montage of shots of the girl failing and messing up reinforce the idea she has a crazy, disorganised life and is completely different to the woman and husband who live a far more structured life. A low angle shot of the woman shows how she is a big burden on the husbands life, a long shot of the fancy interior of their house reinforces the idea he didn't plan this and just wants life to be 'normal' and almost hates the fact she is ill, this is conventional of trailers as one person may seem mean but later has a realisation moment which causes them to come back to the person as they realise how wrong they were. This is edited next to a flashback of her first noticing her illness and pinpoints the moment their lives changed forever and their love started to deteriorate, a close up panning shot of her hand to her face highlights her emotion and causes the audience to empathise with her as they wonder what they would do and how much their lives would change if this happened to them.Several close up shots of the characters show their emotions and cause more sympathy for them from the audience, in a following shot of the woman the girl is in the background showing how she'll always been there waiting to care for her. Multiple two shots show how together the woman are a team and both help each other as an alone shot implies the girl has a lonely, troubled past that is being healed by being with this woman.Throughout the trailer everyone stands over the woman but girl is seen sitting next to her on multiple occasions showing how she doesn't think she's above her and see's her as no different to anyone else - an equal to herself. A final close up shot of them smiling implies they help each other as smiling can be thought as something neither of them really did before they met each other.

The girl shows up in a white pick up truck which doesn't connote wealth or sophistication and looks fairly out of place as it's overshadowed by the couples lush house, this gives the audience its first hint of the different types of lives these characters live. The husband is wearing a suit and his wife is wearing a nice blouse whereas the girl is wearing far more rugged clothing - again showing the difference between these characters and conforming to conventions as it's usually an unlikely pairing in drama films and that's what makes the film interesting to watch. The husband stands whilst the woman sit suggesting he's in charge but as the woman speaks you can see she holds a lot of the power too even if she can't stand to show this. The girl and woman both end up on the floor suggesting they are each others equal and neither one of them thinks they're better than the other one whereas when the woman is with her husband she stands even though it looks painful as she has to continue to assert power in the relationship - he possibly thinks he's better than her. The flashback is shown in black and white suggesting it was a long time ago or it at least seems that way, it fades to colour though implying that this isn't some beautiful scene from a movie it's real life, alternatively it could show how this helped bring colour into her life as if caused her to hire the girl to care for her. The woman often wears dark clothing connoting she's not happy in her life and often thinks of death, the girls camouflaged jacket suggests people don't notice her of look over her as they think she's nothing suggesting she too has had a hard time in life. The large smile on their faces at the end though shows that together they bring each other happiness, something which entices the audience to want to see the film to see how they can still smile even in the worst of times.
