Trailer Analysis
Before We Go
The trailer starts with dialogue that fits the romance genre "we met for a reason", the music in the background is quite sad to begin with and the woman is crying suggesting maybe this romance story doesn't end well, the music builds to more dramatic as a piano part is introduced, suspense is building as you wait for the two love interests to finally meet. The music seems inspiring though and suggests their love may be too, finally the boy meets girl and there's the standard dialogue and conventionally one of them is resistant with the girl stating "you can't help me". Add a bit of humour between the two and they soon start to bond, with the music not changing in tempo or volume showing how their meeting hasn't changed anything in their lives yet. As the two of them spend more time together and begin to enjoy each others company even more there is more of the cliche loving dialogue giving the romance genre lovers what they're looking for - "have you ever had a feeling someone was going to play a major part in your life". The music then changes again becoming much more upbeat, inspiring and more fun showing the audiences it's not all doom and gloom some happiness can come from this relationship and then there's the humourous part at end to reinforce the idea that it's not all doom and gloom.
The establishing shot of the city is the first thing we see in the trailer cluing the audience up that even if they didn't know the genre they could guess it was romance as it's set in the pretty lights of the city, this is followed by close up shots of the two characters alone in grand central to show their emotions as they seem sad and uninspired to do anything - long shots show how tiny they look in the great spectrum that is grand central station. The city is shown again pointing out the fact that as this point they're just another love story in the big apple and they're nothing unique so far. During their first conversation they appear in medium shots on their own to signify how they're still strangers at this point, a medium shot of the two of them at opposite edges of the frame reinforces this idea but the bright white light behind them could suggest how they are the light at the end of the tunnel for each other and can save each other from whatever problems they have in their lives. As the two of them grow closer more two shots are used showing how they are no longer strangers and more like friends, a close up two shot shows how they have got to know each other over this night and have become good friends, as she talks more loving dialogue a close up shot of her shows hes in background, he's now on her mind and she's not sure what to do about it, more close up shots show they are learning more and more about each other. A final montage of the night they spent together clearly indicates how as the night goes on they grow closer and makes the audience hope they get their 'happily ever after', on of the final two shots of them is a long shot with the city in the background as if they've almost escaped it and are something more than just your average everyday city romance.
Where he first see's her in grand central station, it has high key lighting and could suggest that she could provide him with a bright future, similarly when they first meet outside its quite dark but as they get to know each other a two shot shows the bright light from tunnel behind them and could symbolise how they are the light at the end of the tunnel for each other. As they discuss what to do pink lights can be seen in the background which connote love and suggest these two will inevitably become romantically involved with each other. The white interior in grand central station where the guy is sat alone in one long shot suggests he is pure and has good intentions to help this woman, she's wearing burgundy which connotes love and passion and again reinforces the idea that the two of them will become romantically involved even though she may be resistant to be friends with him in the beginning.
